Real-time software and hardware integration

C++ integration for control-loading hardware across simulation platforms, with attention to the boundary between software behavior and physical response.

Where this work fits

My control-loading work includes architectural responsibility for real-time C++ software, hardware subsystem communication, deployment, maintenance, and reliability troubleshooting across simulation platforms. Separately, I served as primary software lead for a helicopter simulator delivery, coordinating software integration with other engineering disciplines. This combination supports hardware-facing work that accounts for both runtime behavior and the practical demands of deploying and maintaining an integrated system.

Problems I work on

  • Hardware-facing behavior must be integrated into more than one simulation platform without confusing common functionality with platform-specific assumptions.
  • Software and physical interfaces need to agree, but ownership of the boundary and configuration is not sufficiently clear.
  • A change appears local to one component while its implications for the surrounding simulator and delivery process are easy to miss.

How I approach the work

  • Establish which behavior belongs to the device interface, which belongs to the simulation platform, and which configuration connects them.
  • Keep platform-specific integration points explicit so differences between environments can be reasoned about instead of hidden behind accidental assumptions.
  • Review hardware-facing changes in the context of the surrounding C++ software and simulator integration rather than treating the interface as an isolated adapter.
  • Plan for deployment and maintenance alongside integration, and troubleshoot reliability issues across subsystem communication and hardware/software boundaries.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of hardware integration is represented?

Control-loading systems across simulation platforms, including real-time C++ software architecture, subsystem communication, deployment, maintenance, and hardware/software troubleshooting.

Does the work extend beyond initial integration?

Yes. My responsibilities include deployment, ongoing maintenance, and reliability troubleshooting, as well as coordinating hardware and software concerns during simulator delivery.

A DIFFICULT PROBLEM IS A GOOD START.
